Markel launches simplified online trading platform

Markel has rolled out a new digital portal aimed at simplifying how UK brokers interact with the insurer, consolidating multiple tasks into a single platform. The system, known as Markel Hub, represents the company’s latest effort to modernize broker-insurer interactions by bringing together quotations, renewals, mid-term adjustments, client management, and claims through a single login.

Markel Hub combines these functions to reduce administrative work and speed up transactions for brokers. The company said the portal was designed to make trading with the insurer “faster, simpler and more efficient,” creating a “seamless” digital experience. For example, a broker handling a mid-term adjustment could process it within the same environment where the original policy was underwritten.

What the portal offers

The platform provides access to several of Markel’s commercial insurance products, including contractors combined, professional indemnity combined, technology combined, management liability package, and policies tailored for charities and not-for-profit organizations. Contractors combined covers liabilities, tools, and equipment for tradespeople and construction firms, while professional indemnity policies protect businesses against claims of negligence or errors in professional services. The inclusion of charities and not-for-profit policies reflects Markel’s focus on specialized markets where brokers often require tailored solutions.

Markel described the design as “intuitive,” claiming it would create a “seamless” experience for users. The insurer did not specify a timeline for broader adoption or whether additional products would be added later.

How this fits into the market

Digital portals have become common in commercial insurance, though their success often depends on integration with existing broker systems. Some platforms have struggled with slow load times or limited functionality, forcing brokers to revert to older methods. The commercial insurance market remains fragmented, with brokers frequently relying on a mix of digital tools, spreadsheets, and direct communication with underwriters.

Markel’s move follows a broader industry push toward automation, though many brokers still rely on phone calls and emails for complex cases. The shift toward digital platforms is driven by factors including rising client expectations for faster service and increasing regulatory demands for accurate record-keeping.

The company’s focus on UK brokers suggests it sees an opportunity to capture more business by streamlining routine tasks. The UK commercial insurance market is highly competitive, with brokers playing a central role in connecting clients with insurers.

The portal’s long-term value will likely depend on how well it handles policy requests, adjustments, or disputes that require human intervention. For example, a broker might use the portal to generate a standard quotation but need to contact an underwriter directly for a client with a unique risk profile.

For now, Markel has positioned the Hub as a way to cut down on paperwork and reduce the time spent on administrative tasks. Whether it delivers on that promise may take time to measure.
