India tenders 28000 cr nuclear power project
India has issued a major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) tender valued at more than ₹28,000 crore for the Mahi Banswara nuclear power project in Rajasthan. Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam (ASHVINI), a joint venture of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and NTPC, released the bid document on Tuesday to invite offers for the Nuclear Island Mega EPC Package (NIMEP). The project involves constructing four indigenous pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) units, each capable of generating 700 megawatts of electricity.
The tender package is extensive, covering engineering, design, supply, inspection, testing, and civil works. Bidders must also handle the fabrication, erection, and commissioning of the nuclear island systems. The document outlines a two-part process for the execution of these tasks, ensuring a standardized approach to the build.
Under this plan, ten identical 700 MWe reactors are being constructed across the country using uniform designs and procurement methods. The Mahi Banswara project, which includes advanced safety features known as IPHWR 700, is one of these key installations. The proposed project entails an investment of around ₹42,000 crore and represents the largest Nuclear Island EPC package ever floated for India’s indigenous nuclear program. Officials stated that this tender will provide substantial opportunities for domestic industries to participate in one of the nation’s largest infrastructure initiatives.

By standardizing designs across multiple sites, the tender reinforces the commitment to delivering reliable, low-carbon baseload electricity. It supports India’s long-term energy security and the national vision of achieving 100 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The facility will consist of four units with the specified capacity, aiming to add a stable power source to the region’s energy mix. In September last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Ashvini-led Mahi Banswara project.
ASHVINI must now manage the procurement and construction of the nuclear island systems. The team faces the complex task of coordinating the fabrication, erection, and commissioning of the nuclear island systems. The project aims to strengthen the country’s indigenous nuclear manufacturing ecosystem and accelerate its clean energy transition.
